Why is it important to classify waste and what is the purpose of it?
As a country, we have a policy in place that seeks to reduce, reuse, recycle, and recover energy. In order to fulfill this requirement, it’s important that there be a distinct separation of waste at the source. This will save a lot of time and resources at the recycling end. Additionally, once waste has been sorted at the source different materials can be sent to the correct facilities for proper disposal. So, what are the different types of waste that exist?
Australia’s three types of waste
As previously stated, each state has its own waste classification. However, there are three waste streams that are generally accepted as the standard types of waste and these are:
- Municipal Solid Waste (MSW)
- Commercial and Industrial (C&I)
- Construction and Demolition (C&D)
- Municipal solid waste
Each year at least 6.3 million metric tonnes of municipal solid waste are recycled in the country. Municipal waste is anything that constitutes as domestic waste. By this we mean all your kerbside refuse, soft plastics, and organics and paper products. To get rid of this type of residential waste we recommend hiring 2 and 4 Ton Marrell skips.
- Commercial and Industrial waste
Industrial and commercial waste in Australia averages around 17.1 million metric tonnes each year. This is roughly one third of the entire waste generated in the country. With no impending innovative waste management solutions, this figure is estimated to go up to a staggering 29 million tonnes by 2020. Because of the nature of the material making up the bulk of this waste – timber, metals and plastic – there is great potential for stronger recycling programmes.
- Construction and demolition waste
101,000 homes are estimated to be built in the 2023 fiscal year. This excludes commercial structures like shopping malls, medical centres, schools and other industrial complexes. All this building generates waste that falls in the construction and demolition category. Within this section you will find inert waste such as steel and concrete.
